Great shot~!  Love the vantage point. Was it difficult to process the P4pro files?

Thanks, it's not particularly difficult but don't expect dslr quality for the p4pro. It's very acceptable for daytime photography but night is still slightly dodgy, akin to processing for example iphone 7 plus photos. Not bad but not great either.

I am contemplating upgrading my P4 to the P4P, and by looking at your images the level of detail is so much better.
But I am sure a lot of it has to do with you skills.  Have you owned  or tried a previous Phantom before the P4P?
If yes, how do you compare them? I always have a hard time color balancing my P4 files, how is the P4P color balance?
Have you been shooting video with it also?  Sorry for all the questions.  I really dig your work and trust your opinion.
Can't wait to see more work from you with your new toy :D

Hi,

I've not used any other phantom or drone for the matter before. The p4p is my first intro into the tech and I'm actually very impressed with how easy it was to pick up and go from the box. I was hesitant about purchasing a drone for sometime as they are not cheap and crashing would not be an option but the avoidance sensors work (in the day) and I can get the images I want relatively easily.

Of course the images are not amazing but with the usage of a good raw convertor (I use capture one pro 10) plus software like (niksoftware denoise and sharpener) you can really bring out the true potential of the files.

If you delve deeper and use median stacking, you can really get away with dslr like images with little noise and lots of detail. Panoramic work is also possible and stitching has some slight mismatching but it's not too difficult to correct. The AEB on the p4p is a little sketchy on my set for some reason though but I think a future firmware will solve that.

Colour balance, I use capture one pro 10 and it's ok to correct but that software is very advanced and can do wonders in colour balancing work.

Unfortunately, I don't shoot video so I can't comment much on that but I think the video side is the better feature of the phantom from my limited video knowledge. The test 4k footage I took looks amazing from my perspective but once again I'm not familiar with video to really comment if its something industry standard.

No problem about the questions, in finality about upgrading from p4 to p4p. I think this decision really depends on your requirements if you need better quality for your images and videos. I think handling wise it's similar to the p4 with some noticeable features for beginner pilots (obstacle avoidance sensors) Perhaps in the future models of the phantom they will all incorporate this new camera so if you don't need to get a new drone so quickly, I think its safer to wait awhile. There is some bugs that are not sorted out just yet at the moment (check dji forums and phantom pilots forums and you will get a general idea of issues others are facing)

I've sent you a message on your facebook page with the image samples I shot to help you in your decision making too..

Have a merry christmas!

Hi Jonathan,

After you mentioned Capture One, I went and downloaded the trial.  Wow, that's one powerful raw editor~!  I like how the images look right off the bat without adjustments as compared to lightroom.  I haven't spent a lot of time with it yet, but I can almost replace my Lightroom and Photoshop workflow with it alone.  How long have you been using it, and are you still using Lightroom?  One con I find with it is that sometimes it takes a few seconds for it to render the image after an adjustment on my iMac vs Lightroom, which is almost instantaneous.  But you are correct that for color balancing work, it is superb~!  Thanks for pointing me to this great software.

I have a question regarding median stacking.  How many images do you usually take, and do you use Photoshop to merge them?

Thank you very much for the information Jonathan.  I am really interested in checking out median stacking like you have suggested to reduce noise.
Will play around with my P4 some more before I make my decision.  Happy Holidays~!
